Houston - A man in Texas decided to come forward and offered to pay for a $1 parking ticket he had received back in 1953. He received the citation the day he went off to join the U.S. Army.
According to UPI, Dale Crawford, now 79, didn't even realize he had received the parking citation until rummaging through some old items. The day he joined the armed forces, he left his 1946 Nash at a parking meter for his dad to pick up.
Unfortunately, his father was late, so he received the $1 ticket when the meter expired.
The Chicago Tribune reports that when Crawford discovered the ticket, he immediately decided to do the right thing and come forward. He stated:
"I am gonna pay the mayor cold hard cash."The city of Houston decided to waive the fee, and officials hope this will set a good example. The mayor of the city stated:"We are so impressed with him coming forward that we have waived penalties and interest. No, it will not make any dent in the city's budget problems, but I hope his example is one other Houstonians will follow."
Today, a parking ticket in Houston normally costs $35. An extra fee of $1.50 is applied for every hour they're late.
